Sandbox

Sandbox provides facilities for learning and experimenting with Python 2, and for creating and editing Python 2 files.

Sandbox is designed to be easy to learn and use, and to provide a PyQt-based alternative to IDLE. (If you need a full-featured IDE, with support for debugging, we suggest you use eric4.)

Sandbox requires Python (2.5 or 2.6) and PyQt (4.2 or later). It has been tested on Linux and Windows.

Sandbox is licensed under the GNU General Public License v 2 open source license.

Downloads:

  • sandbox.pyw (v. 0.9.9, 200K); you may need to right-click and choose `save link as' or similar for this
  • sandbox.zip (v. 0.9.9, 92K)
Once downloaded (and unzipped if you got the zip), it is ready to use, so long as Python and PyQt are correctly installed. On Linux you will probably have to set the file permissions to executable and put it in your path.

Note that a 1.0.0 release or a Python 3 release are both unlikely due to lack of time, so you might be better off trying one of Python's other IDEs such as Eric which has far more features and is much more actively maintained.

If you like Sandbox, you might like to buy one of my books. I also provide training and consultancy in C++, Qt, Python and PyQt.
